It's About Time

Goodness me. All of a sudden, men are being threatened with legal punishment for lying to women to get sex. For the past 3000 years, whenever women complained, they were treated like they were idiots.

Woman: But he said he was single and that we'd be together forever.

Men: Men lie. You're an idiot.

Woman: But no decent person could lie about that.

Men: Men can. You're an idiot.

Woman: But I feel so violated and used.

Men: Tough. That's what you get for being an idiot.

Woman: And fifty years ago my male relations would have beaten the snot out of him.

Men: True, and we were fine with that. But these are modern times, and we live increasingly by legislation.

Woman: Hmm..... (Sells late mother's jewellery, hires lawyer.)

Men: Uh, oh.

I am very interested to see where this goes - it could be very helpful and also a royal mess...but I do hope people are deterred from lying because of this - fear isn't the most noble motivation for not lying but it's better than someone being deceived.

I have to say Seraphic, I think that a simple recourse to Catholic morality is enough, "I am saving myself for marriage", is enough to send men who lie packing never to return. Criminalizing lying to get sex(i.e. turn it into a fraud claim) will create all sorts of problems. Hard problems would be women will openly threaten men with lawsuits, and actually engage in lawsuits which will just create a cycle of mutual recrimination between the sexes, to the not unimportant soft problem wherein good men end up being too intimidated to ever ask women because they simply do not want to engage in the culture that this legalistic superstructure has created.

That being said, the man in this article was wrong to sue for defamation of character.

Justine, you are so right. You are absolutely 100% right, and I wish all Catholic girls had you to remind them every morning. As Clio points out, nice Catholic girls have to put up with a chorus of not-so-nice "Catholic" and non-Catholic girls telling them they'll never get a man if they don't put out eventually.

I have zero sympathy for men who lie to get sex, or who pressure women for it, or otherwise act like scum. Now, I would prefer that they be social outcasts and that no nice girl would date them later (and maybe the wronged girl's father would beat the daylights out of him), but lawsuits aren't the way to go.

I think that a simple recourse to Catholic morality is enough, "I am saving myself for marriage", is enough to send men who lie packing never to return.

Unfortunately, it's also an invitation to a type of man who sees women - especially virgins - as a conquest.

As for the chorus of girls who say that you'll never find a man: hey, they aren't doing it to be mean; they are doing it because that's what life taught them! Either they put out for men who made that a condition of dating, or they got dumped. A lot. Sadly, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy; men can demand whatever women think they have to do.

(Hey, I'm cynical, but the pastor I was dating in the spring who went on his "My friends say I shouldn't date you unless you sleep with me" kick did a number on me. Okay, it's also chocolate croissant and coffee time.)

Fantasy answer to pastor: "Oh yeah? Well, Saint Paul said you should flee fornication. Waiter! Cheque! Taxi!"

ROFL. Oh, I love that, but I was too gobsmacked to say anything. It was like the circuits in my brain froze up the way an overloaded computer does.
