Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that at least 3 of 4 overseas Operation Valentinus packages reached their targets in time.

Survival Tip: Every time you see a canoodling couple today, take a breath and silently say, "Bless their little hearts." It might be fun to count them, too. Count up each couple whose little hearts you bless, and then report to me!

Thank you so much Seraphic! Happy Valentine's Day to you and BA as well - bless your hearts! : )

I woke up this morning and thought to myself in your words, "Remember, this isn't Failure Day."

Some friends of mine who aren't Catholic have offered to go to mass with me and have lunch afterwards. Isn't that a great Valentine's gift???

Dear Seraphic;

and a very Happy S. Valentine's Day to you too !

I like your survival tip; but have to say that I prefer the simple one of thinking 'Oh Dear; how sad'.

Lest you think I'm hopelessly misanthropic, by the way, I must explain that my late wife and I used to make S. Valentine's day the one day in the year on which we never, under any pretext, went out for a meal, or did anything else in the way of 'public displays of affection', but rather stayed at home and just enjoyed each other's company in private - a habit which, I have to say, most of my other married friends seem to adopt as well.

It seemed to us - and seems to me still - that feeling obliged to make a public demonstration of your affection in the interests of the greetings card manufacturers, the chocolatiers, the florists, and the restaurateurs, only tends to suggest that this is something which you don't do all the time - and if you (as I have no doubt you and B.A. do) do demonstrate your love to each other regularly and often, then why let yourselves be bludgeoned into doing so publicly once a year for other people's benefit ?

S. Valentine's Day Greetings to one and all; but keep your love for yourselves, and celebrate it together where it is meant to be celebrated - in private !

Aw, thanks! Happy Valentine's Day to you too! I haven't seen any canoodling couples yet, but I only went to church and now back home for some cozy lunch and reading. :)

DM, you forgot to say, "Bless their little hearts!"

Thank you, Seraphic! Happy Valentine's Day to you, too! I am happy to report that my Operation Valentinus was successful, that all my married friends have completely forgotten it is Valentine's Day (even the women), and my dear dad asked me to be his Valentine. Thanks for your role in making this a lovely day. :)

I'm not sure that I belonged on your list, as I am Engaged, but thank you anyway for the kind wishes! I received a lovely valentine today, as well as a small (by request) box of chocolates.

Lest singles think I seem to be boasting of my good fortune in their presence, I will add that until I met my intended, I had never received either a card or a gift on the day before. While I rejoice in my good fortune I don't feel at all smug about it.

Happy Valentine's Day, Seraphic! And thank you for giving your readers the idea to give valentines to single friends; those who have told me they received them all liked them.

I think Anonymous was Clio!

Amy, how did you make the married people forget Valentine's Day? What is this mysterious power that you have?

Virginia (or Ginny?), Happy Valentine's day!

I almost forgot it was Valentine's Day myself. My husband worked. Luckily we are nice to each other on other days, too. ;)

Personally, I think V-Day isn't really for married couples. It's mainly for telling people you love them whom maybe you don't tell so often. I salute the "Operation Valentinus" idea -- that's the sort of thing I was thinking of.

Happy St. Valentine's Day Auntie Seraphic,

I want to report Operation Valentinus is in progress for my younger college aged sister.

Right back at you, Seraphic. (And, uh, bless the little hearts of Seraphic and B.A.!)

I received a lovely e-mail from my sister sprinkled with thank-yous and hockey talk (there was an enclosure regarding our hometown team).

Aww, thanks, Seraphic! I always thought the whole business of making a big deal of today was rather silly, but have enjoyed playing up the fun bits for all they're worth.

For instance: Gave the little girls I babysat today little cards, and had them color valentines for their parents. The two-year-olds didn't know what to do with them! It was wonderful. I consider that a Valentine's Day well spent!

And I think I might go out and buy myself some flowers tomorrow, since they'll be on sale and whatnot...

Thanks Seraphic and a Happy Valentine's Day to you too!

I was about town this evening, but only saw one couple doing anything that resembled canoodling. Bless their hearts!

I hope you had a good St. Valentines (and Cyril+Methodius, and Quinquagessima) too! mine is still going on for a tiny while, though yours I think ran out a few hours back... it's nifty, the way any given day keeps going on *somewhere* for 47 hours, eh?

God bless, and thanks for the shout-out!

Happy Vday all!
I sent seraphic the full report but in short, I had dinner tonight with a friend and then went dancing at a dance that was part of a week long swing marathon to raise money for Haiti...tonight they were selling chocolates that you could have "delivered" and the messages read aloud for $1.50 each and all proceeds went to Haiti - it was awesome to be a part of that on a day that is supposed to be about love, and how much more real can you get than by helping those in need? Altogether the swing dancers in MTL raised over $7000 in one week! Amen!

Seraphic;

as it happens, I had occasion to use neither of our formulae, because I don't think I saw a single couple in what might be described as V-Day mode all day - in fact I think the only person I saw yesterday who appeared to be affected by the occasion at all was a young lady at the TLM I went to last evening who was all alone, and apparently very disheartened by that fact.

Hi Seraphic,

Thanks; strangely enough, I didn't see any canoodling (what *is* this? Some kinda funky Canuck word?!?) today; but we did have a simply grand old time at our weekly Vespers group and dinner, the lack of canoodling notwithstanding. I took up your Valentine "operation" in my own way by bringing chocolate truffles for the whole (almost completely composed of singles) group. It's odd: this was the first Valentine's Day "unattached" for me in several years, but is certainly among my favorites!

Well, happy Mardi Gras to one and all (I guess today is Lundi Gras?!).

DM, I hope you told her about this blog!

Good work, everybody! Now we have to gird ourselves with thoughts of Lent.

Dominic Mary said...

Seraphic;

I thought about it, but concluded it wouldn't be appropriate - she was in her late teens/early twenties, and I am at least thirty years older.

A TLM community is not the place to get a reputation for being a dirty old man ! LOL

Thanks for the good wishes, Seraphic! I was out of town for a bit, and just saw this.

I got cards out, but not flowers, in every case. Next year, better planning, tho, from seeing what slipped this year.

Thank you so much for encouraging us to do "Operation Valentinus;" great idea!
